Kybella is a brand name for deoxycholic acid, a synthetic bile acid which is indicated for diminution of moderate to severe fatty fullness under the chin. Kybella is the only injectable approved by the FDA for the treatment of “double chin”. Kybella is injected into multiple sites within the submental area. Depending on the amount of fat, one may require 2-4 vials of Kybella per treatment. One may require up to 6 treatments at intervals of no less than 1-2 months apart to obtain the desired aesthetic effect. Each patient’s need is different and treatment must be tailored to the amount of submental fat and the desired aesthetic effect.
Kybella injections are not suited for all patients who have sagging submental area. Patients who have excessive sagging skin under the chin and patients who have marked platysmal bands may not achieve the desired effect with Kybella injections.
Some patients may be excluded from the use of Kybella if they currently have or have a previous history of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing); patients who have had previous surgical or aesthetic treatment of the submental area; patients with a bleeding abnormality or who are currently being treated with an anticoagulant or antiplatelet .
The most common post-treatment occurrences are: Injection site edema/swelling, hematoma or bruising, pain, redness or induration (hardness of tissue) at injection site. There is a reported 4% occurrence of marginal mandibular nerve damage in clinical trials which manifested as uneven smile, facial weakness or dysphagia. All of the nerve damage symptoms resolved spontaneously.
The best thing about Kybella is the fact that the fat cells that are destroyed through the treatment will never return.
